Between the beach, the dike, and the meadows

Just take a break

In addition to the 12-kilometer-long beach in St. Peter-Ording, Eiderstedt has plenty more to offer: With a view stretching all the way to the "Eidersperrwerk" (flood barrier) from the green swimming beach in Vollerwiek, among recreational boats and peaceful idyll at Tetenbüll Spieker, on a sandbank in Westerhever, or at the Tönning outdoor pool. A wide range of diverse locations, whether you’re looking for action and socializing or seeking relaxation and peace. Whether you’re swimming in the Wadden Sea National Park, strolling along the coast, or taking a bike ride around the peninsula—Eiderstedt is surrounded on three sides by the vast North Sea, providing the perfect conditions for a getaway by the sea.

Swimming Spots in Eiderstedt

Between the meadow, the sand, and the pool

The beach at St. Peter-Ording is divided into four sections: Ording, Bad, Böhl, and Süd (Dorf). Each beach has its own charm, and together they stretch 12 kilometers long and 3 kilometers wide. In Böhl, you’ll find peace and relaxation, while Ording offers events and water sports. Many mudflat hikes start at the Südstrand, and Bad is known for its 1.3-kilometer-long pier, which is now over 100 years old!

Westerhever isn’t just known for Eiderstedt’s landmark, the Westerhever Lighthouse; it also offers a variety of swimming spots: At Westerheversand, you’ll find a 9-kilometer-long sandbank—a swimming spot right next to the lighthouse—and at Stoffhusen, there’s a family-friendly beach with sand and grass, complete with beach showers. Definitely worth a visit!

In Tetenbüll, you’ll find an idyllic swimming spot right next to a mooring area for motorboats and sailboats in the summer. There’s also plenty to eat here after your swim: just behind the dike, you’ll find a restaurant and good access for those of you traveling by car.

Information about Tetenbüll

In the maritime port town of Tönning, you’ll find two great places to swim a few laps and relax for a while. The Tönning seawater outdoor pool has been around since 1964 and is even heated. Diving platforms, fun for the little ones, and Olympic-level training—it’s all possible here.

If you prefer the North Sea, you can visit the swimming beach on the Eider River. In addition to beach chairs, a swimming pier, and a dining area, there’s a sandy beach and a sunbathing lawn.

In Vollerwiek, you’ll be treated to a view stretching all the way to Büsum and the "Eidersperrwerk" (flood barrier). Patrolled by the DLRG during the summer months and equipped with beach chairs available for rent, this small cove by the dike is ideal for families and those seeking relaxation. Even at low tide, kids will find plenty to do here and love playing in the sandbox. You’ll find free parking right on site—just across the dike.

Böhl Lighthouse

It may not be quite as well-known as its red-and-white-striped neighbor in Westerhever, but it’s definitely worth a visit: From the Böhler Lighthouse, you can enjoy a fantastic view of St. Peter-Ording, the southernmost local district, and one of the most beautiful sunsets.

Lighthouse "Westerhever"

The Westerheversand Lighthouse, with its matching lighthouse keeper’s cottages, is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the North Sea coast. Nestled in a lush salt marsh landscape, time seems to stand still here at the northwestern tip of the Eiderstedt Peninsula, which is accessible only on foot or by bike. The Westerheversand Lighthouse is far more than a landmark—it is a place full of magic.

When I stand at the top of the dike, take a deep breath, and let my gaze wander over the salt marshes, the lighthouse "Westerhever", and the North Sea… To me, that’s pure freedom and home!

Our Home Ports

A stroll around the harbor and watching the ships

Shaped by the tides, shipping has always been a major part of life on the North Sea. That’s why you’ll find three harbors in Eiderstedt. The most popular of these belongs to the port town of Tönning. The town’s maritime charm will captivate you right away. Ships and boats are moored in the small harbor on the Eider River, underscoring the peace and tranquility of this little fishing town. Tetenbüll also features a cozy sailing and recreational boat harbor, with an inviting swimming spot right next to it. The Tümlauer Koog was once home to many fishermen from Ording and today serves as a popular spot to, for example, take in the view all the way to the lighthouse "Westerhever".
