If Seagulls Could Talk

If seagulls could talk, they’d probably be the best ones to tell us what’s going on here on the peninsula and in St. Peter-Ording, and what’s new.

Identifying seagull calls, however, is another story. It’s not as if we haven’t tried—but even we, who know every seagull on Eiderstedt by name, unfortunately don’t stand a chance here. That’s why we’ve decided to take matters into our own hands.

Due to renovation work on the drinking water pipeline, the L33 (Eiderstedt Straße) will be closed to traffic on one side from July 6 to August 31, 2026, between the Am Kurpark junction (Bad train station) and the Schulstraße intersection (major intersection leading to the market square). This is a moving construction site along the route.

The “Westmarken” railroad crossing (sidewalk) will be temporarily closed to all traffic during the construction work.

Currently, there is once again an increase in the number of stinging nettles on our beaches. These occur naturally in our waters, but due to the warm water temperatures, they appear more frequently when there is an easterly wind.

Jellyfish venom is not dangerous in itself and is only mildly toxic. If you come into contact with it, rub the affected area vigorously with sand to relieve the itching. However, if you experience an allergic reaction—such as tingling, swelling, or difficulty breathing—call emergency services immediately.

  • Please be mindful of your surroundings and those around you while Badding
  • If your skin comes into contact with them, rinse the affected area thoroughly with seawater—not freshwater
  • Then dust the affected area with sand, let it dry, and scrape it off with a card using light pressure
  • Alternatively, or if symptoms worsen, go to the emergency room
  • The jellyfish venom is usually harmless and causes mild pain and skin irritation

The lifeguards are available to offer advice and assistance.

Experience a break from it all

And here we go again—with a huge dose of Strand aufs Herz to fill your heart!

With our own website, we’re giving the beach the spotlight it deserves.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve spent a lot of time exploring our 12-kilometer-long sandy beach for you. We rode horses along the water’s edge, had a meal 7 meters above sea level, crowned Grandpa the “King of the Mudflats,” and watched kiteboarders soar through the air. In the summer, our beach is a place of diversity—here, everyone can do what they love. You can relax, explore, enjoy yourself, or let off some steam. Whether you’re with your loved ones or all by yourself, you’re right in the heart of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site, the Wadden Sea.

More about “Strand aufs Herz”

Johannes Oerding on the dike at St. Peter-Ording
I love coming to St. Peter-Ording because of the peace and quiet. That's exactly what I need to write songs, find inspiration, and reflect on myself.
