Tradition with a Modern Twist

Biikebrennen (traditional fire to say goodbye to winter)

The traditional Biikebrennen (fire to say goodbye to winter) is held to bid farewell to winter. In the past, it is said, this was a way to bid farewell to sailors who were setting out into the world again after their winter break. It’s also said to drive away evil spirits. Today, Biike (traditional fire to say goodbye to winter) stands for an event that’s all about togetherness and coziness. A huge bonfire is lit, St. Peter-Ording holds a torchlight parade, and afterward, some people enjoy a meal of kale. Pure North Sea!
