Longing for the Sea

Enjoy the open spaces and tranquility

Sometimes you don’t need a to-do list—you need open spaces, peace, and pure nature. St. Peter-Ording is the perfect place for you: kilometers of sandy beach, dune landscapes, North Sea waves, and special spots where you can simply be and marvel.

This is the place for you if you don’t want more stimulation—you just want to enjoy yourself. You’ll feel the sea, the wind, and the waves. Very special spots on the peninsula show you the sea from a unique perspective: you’re right in the middle of it, climbing high above, taking in the vast expanse, and experiencing places that stir the soul along the North Sea.

When everyday life gets too noisy for me, all I have to do is stand barefoot in the waves, and everything around me becomes quiet again.

Take a Deep Breath & Recharge Your Energy

A Getaway in Three Climate Zones

The secret of our air lies in the three climate zones. On a long walk, you’ll pass through the peaceful pine forest. Then you’ll reach the protected dune landscape, and finally you’ll find yourself in the surf zone right by the water, where the air is enriched with the finest droplets of seawater. This natural transition strengthens your immune system, clears your airways, and helps you recharge.

Make a point of taking time for yourself and walk through these zones. Exercising in the fresh air reduces stress hormones and gives you a deep sense of inner peace. The saltwater of the North Sea, the natural mud, and the sulfur brine are our strongest allies in helping you recover from the stresses of everyday life. Here, you’ll immediately feel your body and mind coming back into harmony.

Reaching New Heights in Northern Germany

A few meters above sea level

Even here, where the landscape is fairly flat, the view stretches far into the distance, and the wind and waves define the scene, we love our view more than ever! And you can even go up high (by Northern German standards). From the Maleens Knoll observation deck in the local district "Bad", a whole new perspective opens up on the forest, dunes, and salt marshes all the way to the North Sea waves. Walking trails through the forest lead from the dike or directly from the village to the platform, which stands over 16 meters above sea level (Eiderstedt’s highest dune, by the way—which is saying something).

In the Katinger Watt, heading toward "Eidersperrwerk" (flood barrier), nature lovers will find another observation platform where they can let their gaze wander over the unique landscape.
The birdwatching tower in the Katinger Watt is also a full 16 meters high and can be reached via a short walk through the marshland. Countless bird species can be observed here in their natural habitat.

This isn’t just for nature lovers—it’s also simply a place to marvel, observe, and unwind. Feel the wind on your face and keep the horizon in sight.

Stories and Legends

Ocean View

Have you heard the story of Maleens Knoll?

It’s actually a rather sad story, but one we cherish thanks to the incomparable view from the highest dune. Many years ago, Maleen waited on this dune for her fiancé, who had gone to sea. Every evening, a light burned on the dune to guide her beloved back to her.

But one evening, the light went out, and Maleen had passed away. A few weeks later, a dead sailor washed up on the beach, wearing the same engagement ring on his finger. Maleen and her fiancé were buried together, and this lookout point is said to have been named Maleen’s Knoll in honor of their love.

High Up & Far-Reaching Views

The Lighthouse: A Place of Longing

Two lighthouses dominate the view of Eiderstedt like few other structures do.

The Westerhever Sand Lighthouse is arguably one of the most famous lighthouses in the north—with its classic red-and-white stripes and its location far out on the sandbank, it creates a special Nordic atmosphere. Hiking trails through the salt marshes lead directly to the lighthouse, and the incomparable view of the landscape from the top of the tower makes this place a truly unique experience.

In contrast, the Böhl Lighthouse stands directly on the dike and is thus close enough to touch. The path to the Böhl Lighthouse takes you along winding forest trails straight to the dike and the tower. The spot is ideal for a quick break on a bench with a picnic or as a stopover on a bike tour of St. Peter. The view across the salt marshes from Böhl to the popular kite-surfing beach makes all your worries melt away.

Experience the National Park in a Day

Time for Myself in Nature

Nature is at the heart of what we do. The Wadden Sea, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site, is a globally unique habitat considered particularly worthy of protection. If you’re interested in sustainability and protecting our environment, you’ll love this landscape. You can’t see everything in a single day, but you’ll still gain a comprehensive insight into this unique natural environment if you take a moment to pause and let yourself be carried along.

Take the time to discover the fascinating flora and fauna of the Wadden Sea. At the National Park Visitor Center, you’ll learn all about this dynamic habitat. If you’re willing to travel a bit further, the Aquarium Multimar Wattforum in Tönning features an extensive exhibition on the Wadden Sea—a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site—as a habitat. Book a guided mudflat hike and get to know the Wadden Sea’s “Big Five,” “Small Five,” “Flying Five,” and “Flowering Five.”
