Packing List & Preparation

Good preparation is half the battle when it comes to a relaxing stay for both dogs and their owners. The North Sea weather is often changeable—and that’s part of what we love so much about it. It’s all the better if you’re prepared for anything, so pack for every eventuality.

  • A long leash for walks on the beach. Also, keep in mind that leashes are required everywhere on the beach—including in designated dog-running areas—to protect nature and other people.
  • A harness and collar—which may get wet and sandy. Especially on beach outings, depending on the dog, things can quickly end up in the sand, in tidal creeks, or in the waves.
  • A small water bowl or bottle. Drinking saltwater can quickly cause problems for dogs, too. Always bring fresh water with you.
  • Plenty of poop bags. We place great importance on cleanliness.
At 60 stations around town and on the beach, you’ll find bags and places to dispose of them. For longer stretches between stations, it’s best to always carry 1–2 extra bags in your pocket.
  • A first-aid kit for your dog, e.g., tick tweezers or disinfectant. While exploring nature, your dog can quickly pick up ticks or sustain minor injuries. Sharp shells on the beach can also hurt your dog’s paws.

Outdoors All Year Round

Together Through the Seasons

The North Sea is beautiful in every season and is always worth a visit. The off-season can be especially exciting if you’re traveling with a dog, when the beaches are less crowded, the temperatures are pleasant, and the open spaces are perfect for walks with your dog.

Springtime on the Wadden Sea

In the spring, nature awakens from its winter slumber. This is when the great bird migrations begin. Millions of migratory birds stop to rest in the Wadden Sea to gather strength for the rest of their journey. A walk along the dike is now an auditory experience. The first lambs are also playing and leaping across the dikes. But this also means you should be especially mindful when out in nature at this time of year. Follow the year-round leash law to avoid disturbing the landscape’s other inhabitants. That way, you, your dog, and the wildlife in the national park can all enjoy spring together.

Tip: Rent an e-bike with a dog trailer or a cargo bike. That way, you can cover kilometers along the dike and through the towns while exploring the area with your dog.

Summer, Sun, North Sea

Beach Days on Four Paws

Summer is the classic vacation season here on the North Sea, and life moves entirely outdoors. Beach chairs are your best friend during this time. While you read, your dog can doze in the shade of the chair. For warm days, be sure to pack fresh water, a light blanket, and find a shady spot so your four-legged friend can rest now and then. In the early morning or late afternoon, you’ll have plenty of space for you and your dog to take long walks in pleasant temperatures with plenty of room to roam.

Tip: The stilt houses not only offer culinary experiences and serve as viewing platforms overlooking the vast landscape, but they’re also ideal for providing shade on hot summer days!

A stroll along the Erlebnis-Promenade or a break at a stilt house restaurant also adds variety to your day. Then you can hear the North Sea waves, feel the wind on your skin, and enjoy that carefree, light summer feeling together.

Autumn Days by the Sea

For many dog owners, fall is the most beautiful season on the coast. The wind picks up, the waves grow higher, and the North Sea shows its wild side. On a stormy fall walk, the wind really clears your head. Wrapped up warm in a windproof jacket, you can feel the power of nature. This season is especially ideal for longer walks—the temperatures are more pleasant, the beaches and trails are less crowded, and you can enjoy your time together in a relaxed yet action-packed way.

The forests also offer ideal conditions for sheltered walks away from the wind. Especially for smaller dogs, the sand blowing on the beach can be quite bothersome and uncomfortable; the trails through the salt marshes and forests, however, are wind-free yet still spacious.

Tip: Stop by a quaint little café for a break—they offer refreshments for your four-legged friends and a hot chocolate or a traditional Phyrisäer for you!

Cozy Atmosphere & Nature Experience

Peaceful Relaxation in Winter

In winter, a deep stillness settles over the town and the entire Eiderstedt Peninsula. When snow covers the dunes and the water in the tidal creeks freezes, an almost mystical atmosphere takes hold. The vast North Sea beach now feels even more open, and every walk with your dog feels clear, quiet, and unhurried. Your dog enjoys the fresh air, the exciting scents, and the long walks through the sand, the woods, and the foreshore. For you, this time is about taking a deep breath, slowing down, and recharging your energy.

Many dog-friendly accommodations also offer a particularly cozy atmosphere in winter, with plenty of space to warm up and relax. A winter vacation with your dog is the perfect way to completely unwind and get away from the daily grind.

Tip: Even here on the North Sea coast, we can sometimes get a lot of snow! If your dog has sensitive paws, always make sure that no clumps of ice mixed with small pebbles collect under their paws and irritate the skin. Long breaks to warm up in small cafés and restaurants are a popular way for both humans and dogs to take a break from the cold wind, especially in winter.

A Look at the Tidal Calendar

Tides

Pay attention to the tides. As the tide comes in, the tidal creeks (water channels in the sand) fill up first. These may look harmless when the sand is dry—or you might even overlook them—but when the water flows into them, the path behind you can quickly close off, cutting off your return route to the safe shore. Before any long beach walk, with or without a dog, check the current high and low tide times.

Sudden sea fog is also not uncommon on the North Sea. When there are significant temperature fluctuations between the air and the water, visibility can quickly become poor, and you may not be able to find your way back to the dike. Always keep an eye on the stilt houses or the dike line.

These rules should always be kept in mind when spending time at the beach; you must pay special attention to the route and conditions, especially when out with your dog.
